Jeff Phillips has defeated long time County Commissioner Paul Gibson in an upset, November 6, giving Republicans a majority on the Board of Commissioners in Guilford County.  Phillips will join Jerry Alan Branson (D4), and Hank Henning (D6), both winners tonight, along with current Commissioners Linda Shaw and Bill Bencini for a 5-4 majority.

Phillips Election Night Statement

After the final precinct votes came in, Jeff Phillips thanked the hundreds of supporters that had gathered in a private home in northern Greensboro.  Phillips remarks were gracious and emotional.  The crowd cheered and tears flowed.   There were many hugs.

First, Phillips thanked his family for their support and patience.  Standing beside him were his wife of 30 years, Lori, and his daughters, Heather and Chelsea, there with her husband, Jon.

Context:

Among urban counties in North Carolina, Guilford has the second highest property tax rate, the highest unemployment rate, and the lowest average household income. Under Democratic leadership Guilford has gone more than $1.1 billion in debt.  Equally troubling: Guilford continues to rank below statewide averages in early reading and SAT results.

Congressman Howard Coble Comments on Phillips Candidacy

"As a resident of Guilford County, I know that the same spending and debt problems that exist in Washington are here, locally, in Guilford.  I know Jeff to be knowledgeable about the issues, disciplined in his solutions to the problems we face, and caring of the citizens he will represent as Guilford County Commissioner."
-Congressman Howard Coble
